Cathy Johnson's
Art Workshops-Online!

At last, there's an innovative, exciting, interactive and PERSONALIZED way to study art -- at home, at your convenience, online!

I offer a complete 6-lesson course (you choose the subject from our offerings!), complete with downloadable .PDF lessons, demonstrations, homework assignments and personal encouragement, even one-on-one feedback, right in the online class.

Learn when you have time -- after school or job, on your lunch break, after the kids are in bed, whenever!

And all this at a fraction of the cost of in-person workshops that require travel, lodging, eating out and more!

In this class you will:

Get lots of personal attention, guidance, and feedback. Unlike most online classes, this one really is interactive.

Ask questions about supplies, techniques, pigments, paper surfaces -- anything you like.

Post your homework and ask questions to the list, and get supportive, helpful suggestions right there.

Get encouragement and feedback from your fellow students ... it really IS a virtual classroom!

Now, online classes allow us to do something we'd never be able to otherwise - go international! The classes have had students from the Continental US, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Canada, France, Germany, Honduras, India, Italy, the Mariana Islands, New Zealand, Slovakia, Sweden and more! The international flavor is beneficial to all of us.

There is even a ongoing free alumni group with monthly challenges decided upon by the members, so you can continue to share and learn together! Recently the group has added a weekly painting or drawing challenge, to keep themselves growing and learning.

$70 covers the entire course -- everything but supplies. You'll find a list of suggested supplies for the course you've chosen in our Files section.

(In a few of the classes, like Creating Textures in Watercolor or the new Watercolor Pencil Workshop, supplies may include one of my books or CDs to be used as text. This is at the request of the alumni students, who have found it helpful to have guidance in going through the work. You'll find more information on the individual class's page and supply list.)

When we are closer to time for a class to start, there will be a convenient PayPal button on the class link of your choice. Of course we also accept checks or money orders, payable to Cathy Johnson, P.O. Box 321, Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.

I hope you'll decide to join us, as hundreds have since we started online classes just over a two years ago. If you would like to be on the waiting list, please write kate@cathyjohnson.info and let us know which class or classes you're interested in. You can also sign up for our free art tips and get our announcement letter - class starting dates are often given there first.

About your teacher:

I'm Cathy Johnson, author of many North Light books including Creating Nature in Watercolor, Watercolor Pencil Magic, Drawing and Painting Animals, Painting Watercolors, Creating Textures in Watercolor and Watercolor Tricks and Techniques, as well as the very popular Sierra Club Guide to Sketching in Nature and the Sierra Club Guide to Painting in Nature. I've been a contributing editor for The Artist's Magazine and Watercolor Magic for 15 years, and was a contributing editor and staff naturalist for Country Living Magazine for 11 years. (See my complete bio.)

I've taught watercolor, watercolor pencil, drawing and sketching, and nature journaling in person, from Maine to Nevada and California ... and now have discovered the wonderful, convenient give-and-take of an international online classroom.

After all these years, I still make art almost daily.

Note: You need a computer with Adobe Reader (a free program available here to open the PDFs, plus a scanner or digital camera in order to post and share homework. In order to take the classes, students MUST be proficient with these things -- I've discovered I'm not qualified to be tech support, sorry!

You may have difficulties or a long wait downloading lessons if you have a dial-up connection ... sorry! DSL or cable is probably best for online classes.

Use your own website or other graphics-hosting source like Flickr or Photobucket, where we can see and discuss them. (A list of places to post art can be found in our Files section.) Classes often have a group pool on Flickr, for sharing artwork and allowing me to make comments or suggestions right on the photo of your work.
