There are ancient places in Ireland that capture my imagination-the cairns at Loughcrew and Newgrange, especially, with their complex and meaningful spiral designs. The light touches them in magical ways and I had to try to capture something of that magic. I experimented with using textured gesso and modeling past to suggest the carvings on the stone, then painted over with acrylic glazes. I was happy enough with the effect that I decided to keep this one.

Original, acrylic painting, 5" x 7".
